The State of My Backbone
I've been having chronic back trouble for the past year or so. I'll spare you all the gory details, but basically I've been through a string of treatments and therapies, and ultimately was completely misdiagnosed by the first orthopedist I consulted with. A few weeks ago, I changed doctors, and miracle of miracles, he actually took some time to go over the MRI that the first doctor sort of waved under my nose. He showed me exactly why the initial diagnosis was wrong, and what was really going on. The upshot was that on Monday, I had an epidural to try to calm down the nerve irritation that we think is the problem. It wasn't the most pleasant experience, but I'm fairly optimistic this will make a huge difference. I can get up after sitting for more than ten minutes, and straighten all the way up. I had to stay flat on my back all day Monday after the procedure, and I took yesterday off to be safe. I took the opportunity to write lyrics for a couple of the songs we're planning for the next album. For those keeping score at home, the titles are "A Perfect Moment" and "Divide by Zero".

Yeay for medicos that actually read tests and take the time to figure out what the problem is instead of using a scatter and duck approach. (they scatter the pills and duck when you come back looking for them)

Yeah. I consulted with the first guy maybe 4 or 5 times. Every time I went to see him, he asked me the same questions, nodded vaguely and prescribed more PT (which under my health plan I can self-request anyway). I never got the impression that he even remembered I had seen him before from visit to visit. Based on my MRI (which I had requested through the chiropractor), I was pre-diagnosed with a condition called Spondothelesis by the radiologist at the imaging center. The first doctor confirmed that and away we went. It turns out the radiologist was completely wrong, and the doctor just hadn't looked closely enough at the film to see what the issue really was.

My goodness, I'm sorry you have Ankylosing Spondylitis. I was actually diagnosed with a somewhat different (and less serious) condition.

Oh honey, I'm so glad you found a doctor who knows what he is doing. They are pearls of great price. I've been worried about you. I hope the new and improved diagnosis and treatment will make a difference.

I know you've been worried about me, which honestly has amused and bemused me. I know how much medical crap you have to deal with every day, compared to which my problem has been a picnic :-).

Look at it this way, worrying about you gives me a break from worrying about me, which frankly, gets old.

Ugh, I can sympathize on multiple levels. I've had low-grade backpain for a long time, and I know how much it affects your quality of life. Last summer, I had a bout of *severe* backpain, which I ultimately solved myself with an environment change, but not before several doctors and physical therapists failed to correct anything.

I also have chronic sinus problems dating back over 15 years, and every so often I tilt at a new set of windmills</strike> go see a new set of doctors in the hopes that one of them will be able to figure it out. I even had surgery in 2002, which made some big improvements in my condition but did not actually solve it.

Good luck on finding the answers!

I'm glad you found the environmental cause for your severe flare-up. I hope you can eventually find the root cause and solve the underlying sinus issue. Most of the people I've worked with have been very helpful. The chiropractor I saw initially got my throught the first really severe phase. The PT I've been working with has been fantastic, amd the exercises she's had me doing have made a big difference. It was talking about my dissatisfaction with my original orthopedist with her, that led her to suggest the one I'm seeing now. She kind of broke the rules by recommending someone.

Most of the doctors I've worked with have been very diligent and willing to try things; on the back issue, it was just that none of the things they were doing were working -- the culprit turned out to be a memoryfoam mastress pad we'd gotten that was causing me to sleep in all sorts of complicated positions that was throwing me out of whack.

I've never seen a chiropractor. I've been considering it, as many people I know swear by them for back problems (I remain skeptical of the more holistic claims chiropractic makes, though I'm willing to be convinced; I was skeptical of Reiki until someone actually did it on me.)

The sinus problems...I fear i may just be stuck with. I've gone through the entire battery of specialists a couple of times, and it never comes down to any diagnosis. (Well, it comes down to "non-allergic rhinitis" which is a fancy way of saying "You're more congested than you should be, but we haven't the faintest idea why.") I've been thinking about running the gauntlet again; I got very discouraged after the last round and just set it aside for a while, as I had other maladies to occupy my time.

I'm glad you found a better orthopedist. Finding the right doctor is more than half the battle.

How's it feeling now?

Sorry to hear about the back problems! :-( But yay for lyric-writing opportunities! Don't forget, I'm the FIRST ON YOUR PRE-ORDER LIST.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover that you have an LJ. I humbly apologize. And I call myself a Bohnhoff Fan! :-(

Thanks to [info]ohiblather, I now know that you are on LJ. So that's why they sold it to the Russians. :-)

Welcome to the time sink!

Sorry about your back. I, too, have back problems. Probably mild ankylosing spondylitis.
